What is MRI prostate cancer screening?

At some point in their lives, 1 in 6 men in the UK develop prostate cancer. However, many prostate conditions go unnoticed in the early stages.

Prostate screening looks for signs of prostate cancer even if you have no symptoms. There’s no national screening programme for prostate cancer in the UK, but men are encouraged to speak to their GP about a PSA blood test if they’re worried about their risk. However, research shows a PSA test is unreliable, with too many false negatives and false positives, leading to underdiagnosis or over treatment.

At medneo, we use biparametric MRI (bpMRI) – a new, non-invasive test for prostate cancer screening that accurately images your prostate with a high level of detail. It’s done in 20 to 30 minutes, does not need a medical dye injection, and research indicates it is more reliable than PSA testing alone.

Reassurance and
early detection

“The PSA blood test is useful but it's not perfect. It can often raise unnecessary concern for prostate cancer when its levels are raised, and can occasionally be normal in men with prostate cancer.

A prostate MRI is the best test currently available to assess for cancer and inform further management, be that biopsy or a period of observation.”

Frequently asked questions

What is the prostate cancer screening age?

A prostate cancer screening is where you are tested without having any signs or symptoms. There is no national prostate screening in the UK. Anyone over the age of 50 can ask for a prostate screening test. If you’re Afro-Caribbean, you may request one from the age of 45.

How is an MRI of the prostate done?

This information will help you prepare for the examination, so please read it carefully.

  1. On arrival, you will be greeted by a technician called a radiographer, who operates the MRI scanner.
  2. You’ll need to remove any metal objects including hairpins, glasses, wigs, non-permanent dentures and jewellery (but not plain gold wedding bands). Watches and credit cards will be damaged by the magnetic field and must be removed. If possible, leave any valuables at home.
  3. You may be asked to get changed into a gown. We provide a locker for your belongings. In general, if your clothing does not contain any metal fastenings then you may not have to get changed.
  4. The radiographer will take you to the scanner and explain the full procedure. You’ll lie down on the examination couch and they’ll help make you comfortable.
  5. It is important to lie perfectly still for the duration of the examination. Movement is the most common cause of an unsuccessful scan.
  6. The couch moves inside the donut-shaped machine, where the centre of the magnet is.
  7. Once you are in position, nothing else will move or touch you.
  8. The examination will usually take between 20 to 30 minutes and you can go home shortly afterwards. Your images are available online within a couple of days and are ready to discuss with your GP in around 10 days.
How much does a prostate screening cost?

We offer same-day prostate MRI appointments using a bpMRI scan on our state-of-the-art 3T scanner, with results available online within 48 hours.

Our price for a private MRI scan is £599, which includes your scan, consultant analysis, and fast-tracked report.

Can an MRI scan show prostate enlargement?

Having an enlarged prostate is common, affecting 1 in 2 men by age 60. It can cause similar symptoms to prostate cancer and raise your PSA.

An MRI scan can help your doctor decide whether your symptoms are more likely to be caused by an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer.

Is a prostate MRI safe?

MRI is a safe method of imaging with no known side effects. However, due to the very strong magnet needed, it may not be suitable for people with certain implanted metal devices, such as a pacemaker or artificial joint.

You will be asked to complete an MRI safety questionnaire, which will be checked by the radiographers prior to you entering the MRI area.

If you have, or suffer from, any of the following please contact the Imaging Centre straightaway:

  • Cardiac (heart) pacemaker or implanted defibrillator (ICD)
  • Aneurysm clip
  • Programmable hydrocephalus shunt
  • Cochlear implant
  • Neurostimulator
  • Implantable drug infusion pump
  • Had any metal fragments in your eyes
  • Had any operations that involved metal clips, pins, plates or other implants (including joint replacements) or prosthesis (false limbs)
